Waiting for the sunset at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. The rocks show off in an amazing color scheme. Millions of years ago they were eroded by Furnace Creek.

Right now this is a hiking path into the valley below Zabriskie Point, but it sure looks like this path is formed by water rushing down during the rainy season. The sun is almost setting. The mountains are already covered with blue haze and it might be a good idea not to hike much further.

The play between sunlight and shadow becomes very obvious at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley, California. One can even see the sand flying in the air and on top of the dune. Shooting directly into the sun is usually not so rewarding, but with the dusty sky this one came out fine.

Hopefully these clouds will bring some rain into the valley. We saw wild horses that looked like they were searching for water. Please let it rain for them and the grass.

Right before sunset the mountains in Death Valley are covered in a brilliant golden light. It's even hard to look straight at it. On the other hand the shadows are real dark. The land is dry. No tree or bush or grass anywhere around. No wonder they call it Death Valley.

Coming down the mountains from 6,500 feet suddenly the sun has risen, creating a glaring golden image on the left side of the mountain while the rocks on the right look dark and soft. Death Valley in California is always good for surprises. Sometimes very hot and other times ice cold.

Somewhere above Death Valley heading towards Lone Pine. This is uninhabited for miles and miles, but there are electric cables, meaning somewhere a few brave people are living in this remote area.

This canyon is also called "Star Wars Canyon". It is used by the US Air Force and Navy for fighter jet training. They come up right through this very narrow canyon.

Those are sunrises like no other. You don't see anything but the glowing sun, the top of the mountains and a little light in front of me on the road. I love it. Way above Death Valley in California.

Early morning en route from Death Valley across the mountains towards Lone Pine, California. It's very dry up here and cold. I wonder if another one of those Military jets is showing up through the “Star Wars Canyon”, which they named ever since they shot some scenes here for the movies.

They also call it StarWars Canyon, as they did some scenes here close to the canyon. I stood there at 6:30 in the morning when suddenly a huge military jet came right up the canyon on it's side. I did not see it coming, but heard the loud noise suddenly it was beside me and a second later it was way up in the sky. What an excitement that was. Later I heard that they train there often.

The different colors of the rock were attracting my attention. The dark rock looked shiny like lava. There are a number of dead volcanoes in Death Valley. This was on Hwy 190 in Death Valley, California. The sun was low already and the road was dark.
