Grand Canyon Sunset

Sure looks like rain coming our way. The sun rays touching the Canyon walls are adding a very eerie atmosphere into the scenery. The light on the trees in front looks warm and inviting but the air is rather cold.

Grand Canyon Sunset

Pointing directly into the setting sunlight is a little tricky. But the different mountain ranges are still visible in the evening haze.

Watchtower at Desert View

Found this scenic view towards the Watchtower which is situated above the Grand Canyon. One can visit the tower and walk upstairs to have a fantastic view far into the desert to the East or straight down into the magnificent Canyon below. During vacation season it’s crowded, but in fall and spring the temperatures are great and the trails are not crowded.

Early Morning

The Grand Canyon walls are bright and fiery early in the morning, while on the left side they are totally in the dark and covered with haze. The Colorado River gets the first little bit of light. Way in the distance in the East one can see the desert if it’s not so hazy.

Early Morning

The Grand Canyon walls are bright and fiery early in the morning, while on the left side they are totally in the dark and covered with haze. The Colorado River gets the first bit of light. Way in the distance is the desert in the East.

Grand Canyon North Rim

Looking from the North Rim towards the South. Over on the other side is the Grand Canyon Village with millions of visitors. The North side is still very untouched. The rocks seem to be darker and the climate is rough. The Park is closed in winter till May 15.

Hikers at the Overlook

A sunny day at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This side of the Canyon is rugged and wild and beautiful. Hikers and people who love isolated areas come here and enjoy the view. As it is much farther away from any large city, you will not find millions of tourists during holidays. Plus the park is closed in the winter till May.

Rugged North Rim

This is a closer view of the Grand Canyon North Rim mountains. It was cold and kind of hazy and dark even though it was already May. What really attracted my attention is the enormous might of this canyon. It's so close and yet so distant. We met a young couple some time ago on the South Rim that just had finished the hike coming from the North Rim. They mentioned the beauty and also the strain they experienced. They were happy and totally exhausted.

Grand Canyon North Rim

The North Rim has a very special ambience with rustic looking log cabins among huge pine trees. All together this creates a very cozy atmosphere. It's sunny and warm and the air smells fresh and ozone rich.

Bright Angel Point Trail

A beautiful sunny day at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It's calm and quiet with just a few visitors and hikers. Far in the distance is the South Rim with the famous Grand Canyon Village.

Bright Angel Point

The Grand Canyon North Rim has a very special flair. It's visited by real hikers with heavy boots and backpacks. Here are no trolleys that drive you from one viewpoint to the next. Even this short walk to the Bright Angel Point can be tough in the summer. It's a real nature experience.

Challenging the Elements

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon has very strong winters and can be really hot during the summer. So that creates a real challenge for the trees clinging onto those rocks.

The Famous North Rim

The Grand Canyon North Rim is more rugged and weathered. The overall colors are totally different than the South Rim which is located across the Canyon. But it's all part of the Grand Canyon National Park. They have a Visitor Center here, a beautiful Grand Canyon Lodge, and a number of hiking trails, including the Bright Angel Point Trail.

Cliff Dwellers Rocks

These are some of the very unique rocks at Cliff Dwellers in Arizona near Marble Canyon on Hwy 89A. It's late in the afternoon, the mountains start getting dark.

At the Cliff Dwellers Stone House

Blanche and Bill Russell who were living in the Stone House would have had this view in the morning when they stepped out of the door. Of course it would have been peaceful, no highway like now next to it.

Cliff Dwellers, Arizona

You drive on Hwy 89A along beautiful red mountains, and suddenly there are these very unique rocks at Cliff Dwellers in Arizona near Marble Canyon on Hwy 89A. They have a little restaurant there and a few houses. It’s a really extra ordinary scenery.

Cliff Dwellers Stone House

This is the side view of the Stone House looking at the chimney, the roof (being a huge boulder) and the Hwy 89A in the background. It belonged to Blanche and Bill Russell in the 1930th who settled here when their car broke down. The structure was built with stacked rocks against a large fallen boulder. Later they converted the house into a roadside trading post.
